Leaky Pools and Sudden Floods: Flood Damage That Remains Outside
Your front yard is sopping wet and covered in mud and other debris. While you are thrilled that nothing has happened inside your home, you still want to know how to clean up the mess, and repair the flood damage that has occurred outside. You wonder if any of your landscaping and other outside toys and equipment can be salvaged. And mostly, you wonder if your insurance will cover the cost of any of the damages, the clean up or the replacement of you flood damaged items.
Your first priority is as always, safety. Do not enter water, even in your own front yard. You cannot accurately judge the depth of flood waters, and you do not know what perils lie beneath the surface. Also, flood waters can move very rapidly, easily sweeping an unsuspecting adult away. Wait until the waters have receded before trying to assess the outside flood damage on your own. Take your own pictures for documentation and then call your insurance agent to begin working on your claim. Many policies do cover some landscaping fixtures and outdoor furniture and may cover ornamental plants and shrubs. They do not, however cover the lawn it self. Insurance policies are individual of course, so you may have more or less coverage for the items outside of your home.
After speaking to a claims adjuster, it will be time for clean up. Flood damage will probably be most evident in the immediate area that held the water, but there may be residual damages as far as twenty feet from the perimeter of the water, especially in the case of really fast, agitated waters. Throw away any of items that will not be able to be safely disinfected and sterilized, flood waters are prone to carrying diseases with them. Look at your plants objectively- can you really hope to save that bedraggled rhododendron? You might have to pull up and replace several of your flood damaged plants, but other, tougher varieties may pull through. Depending on your location and where the majority of the water came from, another major obstacle to deal with might be mud and debris. Do not handle trash, leaves or other flood items with bare hands, especially if you have open wounds on your hands or a weakened immune system. Wear gloves and use a shovel -making sure that you tightly bad and discard any of the debris immediately.
Once the majority of the flood damaged items have been removed or cleaned, it will be time to get rid of the mud itself. Ironically enough, the best way to do this is to spray your muddy lawn with a hose. That’s right, put more water on it! Do not aim directly at the roots of your grass, it is stressed enough and will probably wash away if you do so. Spray gently, allowing the mud to run to a centralized location where it can all be dealt with. Do not allow this to run into storm drains however, it will only cause further problems.
